Melting pot

Melting pot is in the beginning a Anglo-American expression indicating a Creuset (used to melt a metal for example). It became a Métaphore used to indicate a phenomenon of Assimilation of immigrant populations of various origins in a homogeneous company. All initial differences (of culture, religion,…) are erased not to form but one more and even together. This term was used in particular to describe the attempt at policy of assimilation of million immigrants of various origins to the the United States of America.

Origin

This term comes from the play of Israel Zangwill (1864-1926) “The Melting Pot”, whose message was that all the immigrants made at the United States could become American, people trained in a crucible of Démocratie, Liberté and civic Responsabilité.

Experiment

This Creuset Démographique constitutes a single experiment in the Human history, carried out on the vast ones extended from the North-American territory during the demographic settlement of the country.

It is about a metaphor describing the manner according to which heterogeneous companies at the base developed together and learn how to live together in spite of their cultural and religious differences. Combining, they are supposed to give up their particular characteristics gradually to adopt a hybrid uniform form final, distinct from each root of origin.

This process is also named Assimilation, with this close its employment is difficult in the case of the formation of the American territory, which proceeded to a systematic refusal of the integration of the native tribes that it met to the peaceful coast.

The Melting pot is today considered in extreme cases of the politically correct because it comprises the concept of a population of immigrants in the United States which conforms to the same mould. Now, one uses the distinct expression more easily (the “salad bowl”), which insists on the character mutually complementary to its various ethnic communities: the majority of the ethnicities of the United States preserve their cultural identity at the same time as they fit in the social mosaic. Their intention is not thus to be assimilated to the standard Anglo-Saxon.

In spite of this inversion, the ideas conveyed by the Utopia left indelible traces in the unconscious collective of the American citizens, and the politicians refer like a required passage there.
