Melanism

The melanism (of the Greek melos , black) is a proportion abnormally high of black pigments on the skin, the feathers or the hair. In a more technical way, melanism referred to a phenotype in which the pigmentation of the organization entirely or is almost entirely expressed.

The cases of the most known melanisms are the black panthers, whose name is abusive since it can be a question of another deer that panthers (there exist black tigers).

One also finds cases of melanisms in the coral snakes or the squirrels. Thus, the melanism is not limited to the mammals.

The opposite of the melanism is the Leucisisme (all or almost any white) and not the Albinisme.
