Meishō (明正天皇, Meishō Tennō ) (proper name: Okiko) (January 9th 1624 - December 4th 1696) was the 109e empress of Japan according to the traditional order. She reigned of the December 22nd 1629 with the November 14th 1643.

Genealogy

The proper name of the emperor before his advent with the throne was Okiko (興子). It was it son of the emperor Go-Mizunoo and Kazuko Tokugawa, the girl of Hidetada Tokugawa.

  • Kan' I.E.(internal excitation) 14 (1637): The rebellion of the Christians of Arima and Shimabara. The shogun sent some officers to it to choke it.
  • Kan' I.E.(internal excitation) 15 (April 12th 1638}: The revolted Christians of Shimbara were subjugated, and 37,000 of them put at death. This war was described in the book Shimabara-ki. By this massacre and other rigors necessary, the Christian faith was extirpated of Japan.
