Meguro (目黒区, Meguro-ku ) is one of the 23 district special (区, ku ) formant Tōkyō, with the Japan. The district was founded on March 15th 1947. The population of the district is of 248.125 inhabitants for a surface of 14.70 km ² (2005).

Geography

Meguro is located between Shibuya at North East, Setagaya in the West, Ōta in the South and Shinagawa In the South East.

Meguro-Ku is primarily a place of residence, but also contains the embassies of Egypt, of Algérie, the Bangladesh, Djibouti, the Gabon, the Kazakhstan, the Kenya, the Kyrgyzstan, Cuba, the Nigeria, Poland, the Senegal, Uganda, Ouzbékistan, just like the Consulate-general of Iceland.

History

Archaeological excavations with Higashiyama highlighted that as of the periods Jōmon-, Yayoi- and Kofun the areas which we call today Meguro-Ku was inhabited.

In IXe century three sanctuaries of Meguro were founded; the sanctuary Ōtori (ja-Hani 大鳥神社, Ōtori-jinja ), Meguro-Fudōson and Hōganji (ja-Hani 法眼寺). The eyes black ( meguro ) of the statue of Fudō would have given the name to the district.

The administrative area was founded on October 1st, 1932, when the Machi Meguro (ja-Hani 目黒町, - machi ) and Hibusuma (ja-Hani 碑衾町, - machi ) were attached to the Tokyo.

The station JR Is Meguro is not in Meguro-Ku but in Shinagawa-Ku.
