The Meghalaya (मेघालय in Devanāgarī) is a State in the North-East of the India.

History

Geography

The State revêt the shape of a mountainous band of approximately 300 km length, in the East-West direction on 100 km broad, for an entire surface of 22.429 km ². The population rises with 2.175.000 hab. in 2000. It is bordered in North by the Assam and in the South by the Bangladesh. Its capital is Shillong, which counts some 260.000 hab.

The climate of Meghalaya is moderate but wet, the annual average of precipitations reaching 1200 cm in certain zones, which makes of it the State more sprinkled federation. The town of Cherrapunji, in the south of the capital, holds the world records of precipitations over one month, while the village of Mawsynram, close to Cherrapunji, holds that of the record of precipitations over one year. A third of Meghalaya is covered with forests. The chain of the Garo in the West, that of the Khasi and that of the Jaintia in the East, are of a moderated altitude, the culminating point being the Pic Shillong amounting to 1965 Mr.

Economy

Demography and population

The tribal populations account for 85% of the population of Meghalaya. The Khasi, the broadest group, followed by the Garo, were those which the Britanniques called the " Hill tribe s". Among the other groups, one counts the Jaintia and the Hajong. However, some 50% of the population, including 54.000 Bengali S and 49.000 Shaikhs, are not classified like tribal.

Culture

Meghalaya is one of the three States, the two others being the Nagaland and the Mizoram, with Christian majority. A notable part of the population follows a philosophy animist.

Tourism

Closed a long time the abroads, Meghalaya tries to promote tourism primarily based on its natural beauties. However, this opening is made difficult by the action of the separatist groups (ULFA and NDFB) which use the Garo mounts as bases operations, helped by the difficult ground forest of access and the border of Bangladesh which allows an easy fold.
