Megatron (driving)
Megatron was an engine of Formule 1 derived from the 4 cylinders 1500cm ³ BMW turbocompressé. It equipped the single-seaters with the stable Arrows during the seasons 1987 and 1988 and the Ligier in 1987. Megatron took part in 32 GP. Its best result in race is one 3rd place (Eddie Cheever on Arrows A10B with the GP of Monza in 1988) and its best qualification is one 5th place on the grid, always by Cheever with the same GP.
This engine made its beginnings in race following the official withdrawal of BMW. John J. Schmidt, (who had endorsed the sentence: the horse-race is perhaps the race of the kings, but the automobile race is the sport of the companies ) the person in charge of Megatron Inc., a subsidiary company of United States Fidelity and Guarantee Insurance (USF&G, principal sponsor of Arrows), had convinced the head office to finance the exploitation and the development of the engine.
The Megatron adventure ended when the TRUSTED modified its payment by prohibiting the engine turbocompressé to replace it by one 3,5 liters atmospheric for the season 1989.
