The medium-distance race relates to the whole of the races of Athlétisme lain between the sprint and the bottom which are held in a sporting enclosure. That thus relates to the 800 meters and the 1.500 meters (even the mile S with the the United States). It is paramount that a middle-distance runner has the possibility of connecting rapids accelerations, a great concentration and reactivity during the test where its muscles are requested throughout the course, as well as a control of its breathing and finally the installation of a tactic. The best athletes come mainly from the African continent .

The 800 meters is a race which includes/understands two turns around a track of athletics of 400 meters. It belongs to the program of the Olympic Games, since 1896 for the men and first once for the women in 1928 then stopped before being reprogrammed starting from 1960 (because of the difficulty of the test). The records current were carried out by the Danish Wilson Kipketer at the men the August 24th 1996 with Cologne (with a time of 1 ' 41" 11 min.) and by the Czech Jarmila Kratochvílová the July 26th 1983 (with a time of 1 ' 53" 28 min.)

The 1.500 meters is a race which includes/understands between three and four turns around a track of athletics of 400 meters. It belongs to the program of the Olympic Games, since 1896 for the men and since 1972 for the women. The current records were carried out by the Morocco Ain Hicham El Guerrouj at the men the July 14th 1998 with Rome (with a time of 3 ' 26" 00 min.) and by the Chinese qu Yunxia the September 11th 1993 (with a time of 3 ' 50" 46 min).
