In the Irish Celtic Mythology, the queen Medb (or Maeve , Maëve ) appears in particular in “the raid of the cows of Cooley” ( Táin Bó Cúailnge ), long mythical account, which belongs to the Cycle of Ulster.

Mebd, whose name means “intoxication (capacity)” is the queen of the Connaught and marries it of the king Ailill, but no king cannot reign without marrying it, because she personifies the Souveraineté. Warlike and ambitious, its only sight weakens the men who look at it, and it is said that it runs more quickly than the horses.

Following a discussion in connection with their personal richnesses, it proves that Ailill has a bull moreover, the Horned Beautiful of Have. The question is of importance since in the Celtic company, the richness determines royal precedence. It makes ask Dare, noble of Ulster, to sell to him its bull, mythical Brun of Cualnge, it refuses in spite of fortune that one offer to him. Uniting the other provinces of Ireland (Leinster, Munster and Meath), it organizes a forwarding against Ulster, for the capture of the bull of Cualnge. The hero Cúchulainn, defender of Ulster, keep silent a great number of enemies and, after the alarm clock of the Ulates which had been bewitched, it is the rout of the warriors of Ireland.

The power and the freedom of the Mebd queen are revealing statute of the woman in the Celtic companies of the Antiquité.

Etarcumul

In the Táin Bó Cúailnge , Medb and Ailill have an adoptive son, Etarcumul (or Etarcomol), which faces Cúchulainn in a duel with death, whereas Fergus Mac Roeg vainly tried to prevent it. Not wanting to kill it, the hero of Ulster shaves grass under his feet of a blow of sword, then it lacerates its clothes without the touch, with the third attack it shaves cranium to him. The combat having to end, Cúchulainn cuts it into two starting from the head.
