Medal of Resistance

The medal of French Resistance was instituted, with London, by ordinance of the February 9th 1943 of the Général de Gaulle, “chief of fighting France”. Its object was “to recognize the remarkable acts of faith and courage which, in France, in the Empire and abroad, will have contributed to the Résistance of French people against the enemy and his accomplices since the June 18th 1940. ” It is the second, and alone, decoration created, after the Ordre of the Release, during the Second world war, by the de Gaulle general.

The medal of French Resistance was conferred on approximately: 44000 alive people, and with: 20000 others on a purely posthumous basis, belonging as well to the French Free S as with interior Resistance. It was also allotted to 18 territorial collectivities (17 cities like Lyon, Nantes, Brest or Island-of-Center, from which left the sea fishermen to shift who were the first, on June 19th, 1940, to answer the Appel of June 18th, and with the territory the New Caledonia), to 21 military units of the three armies and to 15 others Collectivité S (colleges, hospital, convents etc). It includes/understands two classes, the medal-holders and the officers of the Resistance , with which the medal is decorated with a rivet washer. The medal of French Resistance is not allotted any more since the March 31st 1947, except with the title of Resistance in Indo-China, for which the time was extended until the December 31st 1947.

The medal of French Resistance was conferred only by decree of the chief of fighting France, of the president of the provisional government of the Republic then, starting from January 1st, 1947, of the President of the Republic.

It can still be allotted, on a purely posthumous basis, under the same conditions, but only with people killed during the war.
