Med-fi
Introduction
The med-fi term appeared in 2005 to indicate a musical style resulting from the scene Indie. His/her big brother the Lo-fi, as for him, gathered formations asserting the side do-it-yourself, made house and voluntarily imperfect. The groups claiming mobility med-fi take again some of these principles but are generally characterized by the use of modern technologies of recording (numerical and data-processing) coupled with the use of acoustic and analogical instruments.
The med-fi and its " large-frères"
- Lo-fi (Low-fidelity: more chaotic and unmethodical musical work)
- Med-fi (Medium-fidelity: work more worked but leaving room to the imperfections)
- Hi-fi (High-fidelity: work controlled during all the process and seeks the most perfect possible sound)
Origin
The term appeared for the first time on the antenna of the radio operator rock'n'roll of Seattle, KEXP, in the United States, to qualify the music of the French group My Diet Pill which reconciles acoustic titles, punk pieces bruitist, or pop songs more “traditional”.Other groups were quickly found in this term, while starting with formations of the scene niçoise (Nice/France) from where is resulting My Diet Pill: Tapenga, Princess Cum or Mueros. But of the groups of other cities and other countries are also described as med-fi: Selar (Lyon/France), Calc (Bordeaux/France), Stuck in the sound (Paris/France) or The Sutras (Ithaca/USA).
Influences
The med-fi groups are generally inspired by formations of the scene Indie (Pixies, Pavement, The Strokes, The Smiths, Grandaddy…), of the " figures" rock'n'roll (David Bowie, Lou Reed, Velvet Underground…) but also by other styles of music (Electro, Punk, Trip hop, Film music, New wave…)
Music
The music med-fi comes from the independent rock'n'roll but represents a vaster crucible of influences and the groups of mobility assimilate this diversity under a sound and a homogeneous and personal color. The principle being of imposing any limit nor no musical barrier but by keeping the most coherent possible sonority.
Attitude
The anti “rock'n'roll-star attitude” is cultivated and the direct contact with the listeners and the fans is privileged above all.The med-fi term is also associated with an attitude specific to these groups: the permanent taking risk, the songs altered in concert, voluntary awkwardnesses, the membership of the culture indie…
The med-fi groups are also characterized by values of car-promotion of the local scene and main road through modern and alternative means of communication (own-produced concerts, Internet, independent radios, peer 2 peer, exchanges between groups…).
