Mecklenburg- Vorpommern , whose French traditional name is Mecklembourg-Poméranie former , but which is today generally called Mecklembourg-Poméranie-Western , is one of the German Länder composing the Germany, on the the Baltic. It is sometimes called familiarly “Meck-Pomm” in Germany.

The term “Poméranie Western”, even if it is very current, can lend to confusion, since it indicates also the Western Voïvodie Polish of Poméranie which is close to Poméranie former (Vorpommern).

TheWestern one is currently divided into twelve districts ( Landkreise in German):

Moreover, there exist six city-districts:

  1. Greifswald

  2. Neubrandenbourg
  3. Rostock
  4. Schwerin
  5. Stralsund
  6. Wismar

In December 2003, a second administrative reform began to finish until 2008, which will reorganize this Land in 5 districts. In addition to the profits in surface, the latter will also gain of responsibilities from which the central government will have discharged. The limits of the new districts are not finalized yet.
