Of Physical and engineerings, to measure consists in comparing a physical Grandeur which characterizes an object (or an event) with that of comparable nature selected like Measuring unit. The numerical value of the measured size is the number which fixes the relation between the measured size and the selected measuring unit. The device which makes it possible to carry out measurement is a measuring instrument (or measuring device ).

The measuring instrument is distinguished from simple the Capteur by the fact that it is autonomous and has its own body of posting or data storage. By opposition, the Capteur can be only the interface between a physical process and information easy to handle.

The physicists use a large variety of measuring instruments which go from instruments as simple as the scale or the Chronomètre with the Electron microscope or the Particle accelerator .
