Meander (river)
The Méandre (today the Büyük Menderes in Turkey) is a river of Asia Mineure, which is thrown in the Aegean Sea. It is born in Phrygie, separating the Lydie from the Carie and finishing between Héraclée and Priène, with respect to the island of Samos, after having sprinkled Apamée, Antioche of the Meander, Magnésie of the Meander and Milet.
The poets of Greece and Rome celebrated the sinuosities of the Meander, from which the name comes from Méandre given to the turnings of the rivers, as well as the beauty of its swan S.
