Me bour

Me bour (or Me Bour or Mbour ) is a city of the west of the Senegal, located on the Small-Coast, to approximately 80 km in the south of Dakar and to 5 km of the seaside resort of Saly.

History

Administration

The city is the chief town of the Département of Me bour, a subdivision of the area of Thiès.

Geography

The closest localities are Saly Niakhniakhal, Saly - Portudal, Malikounda Sas, Fahor, Sintiou Mbadane, Nianing and Warang.

Geological physics

Population

At the time of the censuses of 1988 and 2002, the city respectively counted 76.751 and 153.503 inhabitants.

In 2007, according to the official estimates, the population would rise with 181.825 people.

Economic activities

In addition to the mining extraction, the main activities are the fishing and the transformation of the Arachide. Bour is to me the second port of Senegal, after Dakar. It exports mainly towards the countries bordering and the European Union.

It is also an important tourist center, appreciated for its sand beaches end and the possibility of fishing with large, like for the experimental ecological Réserve of Me bour, a site protected since 1987.

Culture

Kankourang is a demonstration which celebrates the Circoncision within the community mandingue of Mbour. The exit of the “Kankourang”, mythical character covered with red barks of a tree called will fara, traverses the streets by terrorizing the population to protect the young people circoncis during their initiation and fascine always the populations and the tourists. It is held in September.

Twinnings

Since 1974, bour is twinned to Me with the French port city of Concarneau.
