McLaren MP4-19B

MP4-19B is a single-seater of the stable McLaren, committed during the season 2004 with the hands of David Coulthard and Kimi Räikkönen.

History

This single-seater is the second version of the McLaren MP4-19, failure monumental. The leaders of the stable of it were so conscious that the service entrance of this second version had been planned with the beginning of the season! It is logically the fruit of the work of the engineers originators of his devancière, Adrian Newey and Mike Coughlan, uses the same engine (Mercedes) and the same tires (Michelin). It is distinguished mainly from the MP4-19 by a reconsidered back.

It makes its entry in competition at the time of the French sleeve of the championship. And the progress foreseen in Montreal and Indianapolis are confirmed: David Coulthard signs the third time of the qualifications, better performance of the year in this exercise for McLaren. Unfortunately, this performance will be only one fire of straw but the MP4-19B finish the race and mark five points. Even if they are still far from the Renault R24 and more still of the Ferrari F2004, progress is obvious.

The Grand Prix of England will be the true catch of this missed season: Kimi Räikkönen signs the pole position in front of Rubens Barrichello and finishes between the two Ferrari on the podium, at two seconds of Michael Schumacher! Coulthard finishes to him seventh, that is to say the best result of the team this season.

In Germany, the MP4-19B are third and fourth on the grid, but Räikkönen must give up (not without to have signed the best turn in race) letting Coulthard take the points of the fourth place. McLaren is now the second or third better single-seat of the plate, still behind Ferrari but at least on the level of the BAR and Renault R24.

In Hungary however the team falls down in her old men through: badly qualified on the Magyar swivel, Räikkönen gives up and Coulthard finishes ninth. In Spa, Räikkönen delivers a race of anthology to deprive Ferrari of a second victory this season (after Monaco and victory of Jarno Trulli), signing the first victory of McLaren since the Grand Prix of Malaysia 2003! In Italy and in Japan " arrows of argent" are less brilliant but in China the Finn of the stable is third.

For the last Grand Prix of the season, to Brazil, Räikkönen delivers a titanic combat with its future team-member, Juan Pablo Montoya, and must be inclined, taking the second place. Coulthard, as the tendency indicated it since 2002, was completely put under the extinguisher by its young team-member, and will not form any more part of the team in 2005. The entry of the MP4-19B made it possible McLaren to consolidate its fifth place with the championship, which is not so dramatic because the new regulation will enable them to make roll a third conveys Friday in 2005.
