McCoy Albert Tyner is a Pianiste and Compositeur of American Jazz born the December 11th 1938 with Philadelphia (Pennsylvania).

Biography

Wire of a pianist, McCoy Tyner studies successively with the " West Philadelphia Music School" and the " Granoff School off Music". Neighbor of the Richie pianists and Bud Powell, it can benefit from their councils on the manner of approaching the " piano jazz".

In 1959, he is the pianist of the " Jazztet" Co-directed by Benny Golson and Art Farmer.

From 1960 to 1965, he plays in the formation of John Coltrane. With Coltrane, it records many albums (in four-bit byte, in quintet, with a Big band arranged by Eric Dolphy,…) for the labels " Atlantic " then " Pulse ". The four-bit byte made up of John Coltrane with the Saxophone, Tyner with the Piano, Jimmy Garrison with the Double bass and Elvin Jones with the battery is one of most famous of the history of the jazz. This group remains still today the emblématique figure of the modal Jazz.

At the same period, it records like sideman in discs Hard bop for the label " Blue Notes " , accompanying, enter others, Freddie Hubbard, Lee Morgan, Stanley Turrentine, Grant Green, Hank Mobley, Donald Byrd, Joe Henderson and Wayne Shorter.

As from 1966, Tyner, records primarily under its name. From 1966 to 1971, even if it to continue to record for " Blue Notes " , he knows one difficult period. He plays in orchestra of Rhythm and blues and is a time guide of Ike and Tina Turner.

As from 1972, it signs with the label " Milestone ", for which it records abundantly with its own trainings. These discs, in particular " Sahara" (1973), starts again the career of the pianist. One can quote, as musicians having taken part in the groups of the pianist in the Années 1970, the saxophonists Sony Fortune, Azar Lawrence, Gary Bartz, the violonist John Blake and the beater Alphonse Mouzon. Its music then mixes esthetics with the modal Jazz, of the Hard bop, the Jazz fusion and the Free jazz. In 1978, it makes a round noticed with the " Milestone jazzstars" (Sony Rollins with the Saxophone tenor, Ron Casing with the Double bass and Al Foster with the battery).

Since, McCoy Tyner continues a prolific career recording for Columbia, Blue Note, Elektra and other labels.
