McAfee Coliseum
The McAfee Coliseum (called Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum and Network Associates Coliseum sometimes called The Coliseum and formerly The Net ) is a stage of Baseball and American football located beside the Oracle Arena in the town of Oakland, in California.
Of 1966 with 1981, it was the playing field of the Raiders d' Oakland of NFL which moved with Los Angeles in 1982 and became the Los Angeles Raiders . In 1995, the Raiders returned to play Oakland in the McAfee Coliseum . Since 1968, it shelters the famous team of Baseball of the Athletics d' Oakland of MLB. It was also the stage of the Oakland Invaders (United States Football League) and of the Oakland Stompers (North American Soccer League) during their short existence. Its capacity is 63.026 places in configuration American football and 34.077 places for the Base-ball which includes 143 continuations of luxury and 9.000 seats of club.
History
It has been the stage of the Raiders d' Oakland for more than 20 years. In the middle of the years 1940 the leaders of Oakland proposed for the first time the project to build a new stage in the sector to try to attract a pro team of Base-ball and American football. It was necessary to wait the years 1960 before a site was selected to build the stage, close to the C.W. Nimitz Freeway. The construction of the stage started in 1962. It was called Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum , and was accomplished in four years. Before playing in the " Coliseum" , the Raiders played Frank Youell Field, which had a capacity of approximately 20.000 places.The Raiders d' Oakland played their first match at the stage the September 8th 1966 and the Athletics d' Oakland the April 17th 1968. The Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum had 45.000 seats when it was inaugurated and its cost of construction was of 25,5 million dollars. The architects who created the stage were firms Skidmore, Owings and Merrill and HTNB. Conceived to be multisports, the Raiders were the tenants single during two years. In 1967, Kansas City Athletics of MLB moved with Oakland, and started to play at stage in 1968. The Raiders d' Oakland played " Coliseum" until the season 1981. In 1982, they moved with the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum.
After more than one decade without the Raiders, the city tried to make return the team to Oakland. As an element of an agreement, the Raiders decided to move again in Oakland Coliseum. In November 1995, a project $200 million allowed the return of Raiders and to add more than 22.000 seats to the stage and 90 continuations of luxury. In 1998, the Oakland-Alameda County Coliseum was retitré Network Associates Coliseum because the company Network Associates had bought the rights of name of the stage $5.8 million USD for 5 years. In 2003, Network Associates renewed its 5 year old contract more for $6 million USD. The stage received a new name after the season NFL of 2004, it is now known as McAfee Coliseum because Network Associates was repurchased by McAfee.
The October 17th 1989, at the time of the World Series, the Earthquake of Loma Prieta which had reached 7,1 on the scale of Richter interrompa the play, one calls since this event the " Bay Bridge" Series.
The December 21st 2005, the capacity of the stage in configuration Baseball was reduced to 34.077 places then which was of 48.219 since 1996.
Future
In November 2006, the Athletics d' Oakland announced that they would move towards the town of Fremont, where they will be tenants with the Cisco Field from here 2011. The Cisco Field is estimated at $400 million USD and it will be able to accommodate approximately 35.000 spectators.After several proposals for a replacement, the Raiders d' Oakland want to continue to play in the McAfee Coliseum .
