Mbeya is a city of the south-west of the Tanzania. It is the administrative center of the area of Mbeya. In 2005, its population was evaluated with: 280000 inhabitants, is more than 95% of the total of the district of Mbeya Urban.

History

In 1905, the area knows a rush towards the Or which leads in 1927 to the creation of a mining city centralizing the services for the area. Mbeya quickly grows time of English colonization then continues its rise after the independence and the arrival of the Railroad Tanzania-Zambia in the Années 1970.

Geography

The city is located on a fertile high plateau at an altitude of approximately 1.700 meters. It is surrounded by several assembly lines, including/understanding many Volcan S. the Monts Mbeya (altitude 2.818 m) dominate in north, the Monts Poroto and the Mont Rungwe in the south comes very close to 3.000 meters. The National park nearest is the National park of the plate of Kitulo, recent and little visited.

Climate

Because of altitude, the temperatures are often moderate in Mbeya. Average precipitations border 900 mm, a quantity quite sufficient for the maintenance of an intense agricultural activity in the surroundings of the city (Maïs, Riz, Banane S, Tabac…). The rain season generally extends from November to May, the dry season being marked by a stronger thermal amplitude between the days and the nights.

Transport

Mbeya is an important crossroads for the south-western part of the country. The city is a point of passage quasi obliged for any passage towards the Zambia, that it is via the railroad TAZARA or the road Tanzam Highway, tarred on all its course between Dar are Salam and Lusaka. Another branch of this road leads of Mbeya until the Malawi.

A Aérodrome with the not covered track exists (code IATA MBI), but it is used only by private flights. New a modern Airport aiming at developing tourism and the economy of the area is in construction with the assistance of the funds of OPEC for international expansion and it could be operational in 2010.
