Maze (in Greek old Δαίδαλος / Daídalos ) is a character of the Greek Mythologie. He is mainly known to be an inventor and an great architect, and to have in particular conceived the Labyrinthe where the Minotaure is locked up.

The myth

One allots to Dédale the construction of a cow out of wooden so that Pasiphaé, the woman of the king of Crete, Minos, can be coupled with a white bull. Thus will be born Minotaure, hybrid creature monstrous. Minos then orders the creation of a labyrinth to him to lock up Minotaure there.

Maze gave the solution to leave the labyrinth to ARIANE, by using the famous wire of ARIANE . The latter gave it to Thésée, which made use of it to leave the labyrinth after having killed Minotaure. Minos having lost its bet with Thésée, it then makes lock up Dédale and its son, Icare, in the labyrinth. Not being able to leave there without wire to guide it to the exit, Dédale had then the idea to create wings to be able to fly away. As these wings were made with wax and feathers, Dédale advised with his/her son not to go up too high in the sky. Icare sought on the contrary to approach the sun, which caused to dissolve wax and to precipitate it in the sea.

Maze found refuge in Sicily near the king Cocalos. Made furious by this escape, Minos decided to find Dédale. To reach that point it used the trick. It had then the idea to launch a challenge that only a man as Dédale could succeed. He promised a strong reward with that which would succeed in making pass a wire through the openings of a shell. To take up the challenge, Dédale had the idea to hang the wire with an ant, the latter then crossed all the openings of the shell.

Knowing that a person had made a success of the challenge in Sicily, Minos knew whereas Dédale was there. King Cocalos refused to deliver Dédale and delivered a war to Minos. According to a different tradition Cocalos invited Minos to deliver Dédale to him. Minos was invited to share the bath of the three girls of the king. Maze had manufactured the bath-tub and scalded Minos which died.

Analyzes

For François Jacob, Maze incarnates the techné (technique) which makes it possible to reach with the control of the world… which makes it possible its customers to be given up with their hubris , to reach their insane companies… In Maze a science without conscience is profiled…

With each problem of its Masters, Dédale is an auxiliary which finds a solution with their problem and as a new solution with the new problem as this one causes: the wax of the wings, solution to escape from the labyrinth, itself solution to lock up Minotaure, itself consequent fruit of its cow out of wooden made for Pasiphaé.
