Maytenus boaria

Maytenus boaria is a botanical species of the kind Maytenus pertaining to the family of the Celastraceae . Its common noun to the Chile and in Argentine is “Maitén”.

Distribution

The species is native of Chile, where it grows naturally between Coquimbo and Chiloé, inside the grounds and almost never with the littoral. One also finds it in Argentina, with the same latitudes, in the well sprinkled Western areas, located not far from the Chilean territory.

Description

It is a tree of extremely elegant aspect which reaches 20 meters in height. It is always green, the trunk is right and the bark grisâtre. It presents perennial, simple, elliptic, acute sheets at the two ends, from 2,5 to 5 cm length.

Reproduction

The maitén is disseminated easily by seeds of good germinatif capacity. It requires deep and fertile grounds. It needs an abundant moisture. Of slow growth, it flowers in spring (October).

Uses

  • It is recommended like decorative species, thanks to its strong beautiful aspect and with its facility of adaptation to the medium.
  • It is adapted for work of reafforestation, especially in the south of Chile, where it grows very well.
  • It is also extremely effective to protect the rivers.
