A mayade is the local name of a festival in the Landes of Gascogne and more generally in the south-west of the France.
This festival is generally organized at the beginning of the month of May (d´où its name) by some 18 year old young people d´un village which passes in each house to collect money and thus to organize a Bal, whose entry is generally paying. The entrance fee generally rises with 4 euros. The participants in the evening in general drink there beverages slightly alcoholic (Bière, Jacqueline, Punch) but one finds also sodas.
Historically, the mayade is a habit of the area which sees decoration d´un young pine (called the but ) as a l honnor of its owner.
Several villages landais organize of Mayades, among which one can quote for example: Holy Vincent de Tyrosse, Saubrigues, Saint-Jean-with-Marsacq, Saint-Geours-with-Maremne, Bénesse-Maremne, Soorts-Hossegor, Tosse, Jose or Saubion.
