Maxximum is a Radio station appeared initially on the tape FM on the 105.9 MHz with Paris, the October 23rd 1989 and disappeared the January 5th 1992 at midnight.
The goal of the CLT with this acquisition was to assemble a new network intended for less than 35 years to compete with the young stations existing (Skyrock, NRJ, Fun Radio) by proposing to new relatively avant-gardist and pointed programming centered around the electronic musics and of its components: Dance, House, Techno, Groove, Acid… the slogan of the station was the Music has its Maxximum .
To settle in the radiophonic landscape, Maxximum wanted to dissociate other stations on all the plans: musical programming, place of the organizers, time volume of publicity…
With a budget of 25 franc million as of its first year, Maxximum develops quickly at the national level and its audience does not cease growing. Hardly one year after its creation, the station reaches the 1% of point of audience at the national level. The station organizes large advertizing campaigns and great events to be made known: it furrows France with trucks in the shape of giant radio, it deploys stickers Maxximum on 300.000 car antennas to Paris. The group Emmis, one of the American leaders of the radio returns in the capital of Sodera. The CLT preserves 71% of the shares.
In 1990, the law anti-concentration of the media, then very restrictive, prevents the development of Maxximum. Indeed CLT has already a very developed network: RTL. The CLT must find a parade by finding a partner who will be majority in the capital of the station. Fusion with Fun Radio or Metropolys is considered. This fusion being considered to be all the more necessary by the CLT which the station knows of the financial problems in spite of its success of audience.
End 1990, the Superior council of audio-visual the request the departure of the director Eric Hauville, because this last cumulates various responsibilities on Maxximum and the Norman network RVS of which he is cofounder. Herve Rony succeeds to him the direction of the station. On this same date, the CLT decides to amalgamate Maxximum with Metropolys, a musical network of the north of France. With this fusion, CLT is minority in the capital of the new entity (35%). The remainder of the capital is divided between SER, a subsidiary company of the group Prisa (48%), Sony Music, Bayard Presse and Bruno Lecluse.
During the summer 1991, the process of Maxximum fusion between Metropolys is committed. The October 3rd, Alain Weill takes the direction of the station. A few months later, in December, the advertisement of the disappearance of Maxximum is made to the listeners, which causes their concern immediately.
The January 6th 1992, Maxximum ceases emitting, to leave room to the station M40, a station inspired of " Los 40 Principal " , a Spanish radio of the Group Snuffed which functions very well with its programming centered on the musical innovations. The M of M40 being used as reference to the 2 radios having given rise to M40: Maxximum and Metropolys. With this radical change (disappearance of the dance music, French-speaking songs occupying 30% of the programming against 7% before) M40 does not manage to preserve the listeners of Maxximum and Metropolys and does not meet discounted success. M40 will wildly be renamed RTL1 in January 1995 before becoming later the network RTL2 a few months.
The disappearance of Maxximum causes the anger of the Maxximaniaques , name given to the listeners of the station, who submerge RTL and M40 of calls, fax, mails. They make on January 6th, a Sit-in in the buildings of M40, express on several occasions in front of RTL then in front of the ministry for the Culture and the Communication, on February 1st, 1992. A delegation of listeners is even received with the SCUMS. But the regulating authority of audio-visual in France will not give any satisfaction to the dissatisfied listeners. To the beginning of the year 2000, a group of Maximaniaques assemble the Webradio Maxxima largely inspired by Maxximum. in 2004 Maxximum UltiMixes Radio " launches; Maxximum Is Not Dead !"
With its peak of audience, Maxximum asserted more than 900.000 listeners on all the France, and 5,6% of audience in Île-de-France
