Maxtor was a company which produced hard drives of Ordinateur S, founded in 1982 and repurchased by Seagate in December 2005. At the time of its repurchase, Maxtor was the third larger global manufacturer of hard drives. It is now a subsidiary company of Seagate.

The markets that Maxtor aimed were those of the desktop machines and the waiters, while concentrating more on storage capacity that the speed of the hard drives with regard to the desktop machines.

History

Maxtor was founded in 1982 as a company developing and producing hard drives. It employs approximately 13500 people and its head office is located at Milpitas, California, the United States. Its research centres and development are at Longmont in the Colorado, with Shrewsbury in, Massachusetts and in Milpitas; two factories ensure the production of the hard drives Singapore and Suzhou, in China. The European head office of Maxtor is located at Bray, in Ireland.

Its turnover for the year 2004 was of 3,8 Md$, against 4,1 Md$ in 2003 (- 7%).

December 21st, 2005 Seagate announces the repurchase of Maxtor for 1,9 Md€ in actions. The constant fall of the incomes of Maxtor (turnover and benefit) and of its market shares pushed it to accept the friendly offer of Seagate.
