Maxime Maufra
Maximilien Emile Louis Maufra, known as Maxime Maufra is a French painter born the June 17th 1861 with Nantes (department of Loire-Atlantique), died the May 23rd 1918 with Sandpaper-on-the-Dormouse (the Sarthe).
Presentation
It is initiated with painting by reproducing landscapes of the edges of the Loire, but his/her father who decided to make a businessman of it, makes him make a Language course abroad in England (Liverpool). There, he discovers what is really painting, in particular that of Turner. He visits the Wales and the Scotland, whose landscapes will be to him a source of inspiration. He returns to France in 1884, he carries out face his community activity and his work pictorial.In 1886, it is noticed by Octave Mirbeau, during an exposure to the Salon of Paris, but it is only in 1890 that it decides to be devoted fully to painting. In 1892, it is the first to be settled with the Bateau-Lavoir.
After having met Gauguin in 1890, it remains with Bridge-Swallow-hole and the Pouldu. It ends up looking further into its own way to approach the landscapes with a predilection for the maritime landscapes of Brittany. It remains then with Quiberon, with the Pointe of the Strong current, in the Presqu'île of Crozon and in many other places. It is also one of the first to install (in 1893) its workshop with Montmartre in a building which will shelter many artists of value (e.g.: Pablo Picasso) and will be called the Bateau-Lavoir.
Regionalistic militant , it was one of the organizers of the Art schools Section of the Breton regionalistic Union.
