max Scheler , born with Munich the August 22nd 1874 and deceased with Francfort-sur-le-Main the May 19th 1928 is a philosophical and German sociologist .
"What is the man, which his situation in the being? " , these questions, as of the awakening of my philosophical conscience, held my attention stronger than all autre." (max Scheler)
His/her father is Lutheran, his mother is Jewish orthodoxe. Converted in the Catholicism, he dies however Agnostique. Professor at the University of Iéna of 1900 with 1906 then with Munich of 1907 with 1910. Its first works are marked by the influence of Nietzsche and its philosophy of the values (in particular the concept of " Resentment " developed in the Genealogy of morals).
In 1902, it meets Edmund Husserl whose thought (the Phénoménologie) will mark it durably although it was never its student. In 1910 - 1911, it gives a course to the philosophical company of Göttingen. Of 1919 to its death, it teaches philosophy and sociology at the University of Cologne.
He was regarded of his time as one of the leaders of the phenomenology (with Nikolai Hartmann, in particular) to which he gave however which mystical accents. Before its rupture with the Church, it contributed largely to the renewal of the catholic tradition - Karol Wojtyla, the future Jean Paul II, which counted among its admirors, devoted his thesis of 1953 to him. But the principal company of Scheler was the foundation of a new discipline: the philosophical Anthropology and its contribution to the development of the Sociology of knowledge ( Wissensoziologie ).
Its sudden death by apoplexy allowed to him to publish only the first steps of this project ( the Situation of the man in the world published the year of its death). Its pupils, Helmuth Plessner and Arnold Gehlen, developed this approach of human of which they asserted then paternity. The sociological reflections of Scheler mark a daring turning in the history of the Sociologie by trying a bringing together between the step of the social sciences and the phenomenology (of which the primacy subjectivist and the importance attached to the conscience often do not go from oneself within the framework objectivist of sociology).
This new prospect will have an echo, in particular, in work of the sociologists Alfred Schütz, Peter Berger and Thomas Luckmann ( The Social Construction off Reality ).
