Max Linder

History

Seriously reached during the First World War, it starts to turn about 1905 and creates comic of a new kind, which will influence Charlie Chaplin.

In 1910 it carries out and plays in the Timidity cured by the serum . As from 1916, it makes three films in the Studios Essanay of Chicago and is a large success with the Small coffee , with Tristan Bernard. Then, with Los Angeles, it will be all at the same time scenario writer, director and the main thing interprets of three films that it there produira : Seven years of misfortune , Be my wife and the Narrow musketeer .

He returns to France, remains in Austria, and makes some films before committing suicide by massive ingestion of sleeping pills (veronal) at the 41 years age, in company of his wife, Helene Peters, whom he had married two years before.

Memory of its work

Maud Linder, his/her daughter, is the author of a film entitled the Man with the silk hat which recalls the life and the work of his/her father through film extracts and documents of time. Max Linder is presented there like “the first author-actor of the history of the cinema”.

Maud Linder also published a book on his/her father. His/her older brother Maurice Leuvielle was a player of Rugby to the Stade of Bordeaux.

A Parisian cinema of the Grands Boulevards bears its name (max Linder Panorama).
