max Horkheimer (born the February 14th 1895 - died the July 7th 1973) was a Philosophe and a German sociologist , known to be the director of the Institut für Sozialforschung (the school of Frankfurt) of 1930 to 1969, and one of the founders of the Théorie criticizes (Kritischen Theorie).

Horkheimer which resulted from a rich person industrial family of Jewish confession, obtained the equivalent of the baccalaureat with Munich in 1919. From 1919 to 1922, he studied with Munich, Frankfurt and Freiburg. in 1922, it passed a doctorate to Frankfurt and became for three years the assistant of Hans Cornelius. In 1925, it joined the university of Frankfurt.

In 1930, he became the full professor for social philosophy at the Frankfurt University. He was one of the cofounders and directors of the Institute for social research until his closing by the German socialist national government in 1933. He emigrates then in Geneva, in Paris then New York where he remelts the Institute for social research in Columbia University.

In 1947, it made publish in the editions Querido (Amsterdam) with his collaborator and old friend Theodor W. Adorno Dialektik der Aufklärung (the Dialectical one of the Reason), one of the most important and dark texts of the School of Frankfurt during this period. Eclipse Reason (Eclipse of the Reason) in 1949 will follow off. This same year, Horkheimer will turn over to Germany to the University of Frankfurt in order to recreate and direct again the Institute for social search for Frankfurt. Max Horkheimer which was one of the founders and editors of the Review for the social search for 1932 to 1939 (printed as from 1933 in Paris by the Editions F.Alcan-R.Lisbonne), which will continue to exist in English between 1940 and 1942 pennies the title “Studies in Philosophy and Social Science” (Columbia University Press).

With the philosophers Theodor W. Adorno and Herbert Marcuse, the psychoanalyst Erich Fromm and the economist Friedrich Pollock, Horkheimer is one of the figureheads of the first period of Kritischen Theorie (Theory criticizes) École of Frankfurt.

Its pupil and successor on the pulpit of Frankfurt east Alfred Schmidt.

Horkheimer is Citoyen of honor of Francfort-sur-le-Main and is buried with the Jewish cemetery of Bern.
