The system of cylinder head of the rifle model 98 is very still often used on shotguns to big game. Among Mauser the most famous guns of the company the Mauser C96 and Mauser M712 Schnellfeuer appear.
History
The royal munitions factory of Obendorf, east creates on July 31st, 1811, by Frederic Ier de Würtenberg, the following year, it employs already 133 workmen.
Wilhelm and Paul Mauser conceive there in 1867, the first rifle taking care by a rotary cylinder head, based on the Chassepot French, him even taking as a starting point former Prussian rifles. The Franco-German War of 1870, having shown the superiority of French rifle, their more recent model, the Gewehr 71 (rifle model 1871) is selected by the new German army, like rifle of ordinance, in spite of the competition of rifle Bavarian Werder M1869. The production starts in Obendorf, three models drawing a cartridge from 11x60 mm are manufactured, a standard rifle of infantry with a 850 mm long gun, a rifle for Jaeger (hunters, light troops) with a length of gun of 700 mm and one of cavalry whose gun 500 mm is long only. In addition, the Serbia licensed product, a version improved of the weapon gauges of them 10,15 mm, Mauser-Milovanovich M1878/80.
In 1886, the French Army adopts the Lebel model 1886, using a cartridge of lower gauge using of the Poudre without smoke, and the other countries will not be long in trying to do as much of it. Germany creates a repeating rifle, without the assistance of Paul Mauser this time, but while using for the first time of the cartridges with throat with cylindrical walls and restricted collet: 7,92 X 57 was born, and all the ammunition of rifle carried out since are only derivatives. The following year, Italian Vetterli-Vitali introduced him to it food by a box charger, more reliable and allowing a higher rate of shooting. Armed German adopts these two innovations with rifle Mannlicher Model 1888, which draws a news cartridge, the 7,92x57 Misters Paul Mauser also works him on repeating rifles, it develops a system of extractor, but having difficulties with the boxes chargers, it uses tubular chargers under the gun. Its Gewehr 92, is not a big hit, because it loses the competition of the American army, with the profit of the Krag-Jørgensen, only four hundred specimens of the version rifle will be sold with the Spanish navy. The first foreign orders arrive with the Mauser 1889 (Belgium), Mauser 1890 (Ottoman Empire) and Mauser 1891 (Argentine) success arrives with the model Gewehr 93, which with its vertical store of five cartridges of gauge 7x57 Misters Connu more familiarly like the 7mm Mauser , it becomes the Spanish lawful rifle and of many countries of Latin America. The Bataille of San Juan Hill will see 750 regular Spanish holding in respect during twelve hours, 15.000 American armed with the Krag-Jørgensen. This event seems to have played a part in the acquisition of the license of the bolt of Mauser cylinder head, by the USA, and their use in their rifle Springfield M1903. The battle also has, a very beneficial effect on the sale of the German firm. The Turkey also becomes purchaser of the Gewehr 93, the Brésil and the Sweden of the Gewehr 94. The following model, the Gewehr 95 gains successes even more resounding, the Mexico, the Chile, the Uruguay, the China, the Iran, the Serbia and the Boers adopt it.
Paul Mauser is also interested in the gun semi-automatic, and its Mauser C96, gains to him also a great business success. In front of this success, the control of the factory is yielded to the Mauser brothers, and this one becomes the Waffenfabrik Mauser AG . To supplement the table, remains to obtain the juiciest market, the equipment of the German army, the Gewehr 98 carries this market in 1898, rifle and its derivative the Karabiner 98k become, standard rifles of the Heer, until in 1945. But in 1941, the semi-automatic prototype of rifle intended to take the changing, appeared completely unsuitable with the field use and after a small production, it was supplanted by its rival the Walther G43. With the fall of the Third Reich, the occupation of Oberndorf was entrusted to the French troops. On the order of a local manager, the factory was then dismantled and them destroyed files. Edmund Heckler, Theodor Koch and Alex Seidel, former engineers from Mauser, formed then the company Heckler & Koch, which became the leading vendor of weapons light of the German army. The Mauser firm exists it always, it become subsidiary of Rheinmetall and produced Gun-machine gunner S, like the Mauser BK-27 which equips the fighter Eurofighter.
Nevertheless, the branch which produces civil rifles was separated from the remainder of the company in 1999. It bears from now on the name of Mauser Jagdwaffen GMBH , and has its seat with Isny/Allgäu. It does not produce that rifles for hunting, including M98 and M98 Magnum which are again manufactured, with identical their versions of origin.
On the civil market, Mauser rifles and their derivatives, were and are often used for hunting for big game, in particular in Africa, sometimes by using ammunition of very large gauge like the .50 cal (12,7 mm). Among manufacturing of this kind, one finds for example, Rigby, Ceska Zbrojovka, Sigarms or Zastava.
