Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation

The Mauritius Broadcasting Corporation or MBC is the national company of radio-television of Maurice. It diffuses on the principal island and the island Rodrigues.

It takes its current name the June 8th 1964. Before this date, she works for the government under the name of Mauritius Broadcasting Service .

The MBC is managed by a council of seven members. A Managing director is in load of the application of the policy laid down by the council and the management of the MBC. He directs an establishment of approximately 500 people.

One estimates respectively at 450.000 and 265.000 the number of stations of radio and television on the islands Maurice and Rodrigues at June 30th, 1999.

The MBC draws its incomes for 60% from taxes and 40% of publicity. A monthly tax is payable by all the subscribers with electricity who have a television station.

From its geographical position and its history, the MBC adhered to several associations diffusers:

  • the Commonwealth Broadcasting Association (CBA).
  • European Broadcasting Union (EBU).
  • Asian Broadcasting Union (ABU).
  • South African Broadcasting Association (SABA).
  • the International counsel of Radio-televisions of French Expression (CIRTEF).
