Mauricio Kagel is a Compositeur, Leader and Argentinian Director (but residing in Germany) born with Buenos Aires the December 24th 1931. It is installed with Cologne since 1957. It mainly stuck to the instrumental Théâtre by renewing sound material (electroacoustic, various sounds). But it also explored the dramatic resources of the contemporary musical language in radiophonic parts, films, works electroacoustics, old forms.

Biography

Born in 1931 in Buenos Aires, Mauricio Kagel follows studies of music, history of the literature and philosophy at the University of its birthplace and becomes artistic adviser of Agrupacion Nueva Musica at the 18 years age. It starts to compose its first instrumental parts and electroacoustics. From 1955 to 1957, he is director of the cultural achievements at the University and the studies to the Opera of Room, and leader to the Teatro Colón. In 1957, it settles in Cologne where it creates later two years Kölner Ensemble für Neue Musik, and between 1969 and 1975, the Courses of new music direct to Cologne. Since 1974, it occupies the pulpit of musical theater, open for him to Hochschule für Musik.

The work of Kagel is extended and varied. At the beginning of the year 1960, the type-setter stressed the instrumental theater, whose On Scène (1959) is the first demonstration and will make of him an authority in the landscape of European musical creation. Thereafter, its instrumental and scenic parts multiply intersected with symphonies of design “  ouverte  ”, Hétérophonie and Cross talks I, II and III . In the years 1970, it directs its work towards the great dismounted tradition (Bach, Beethoven, Brahms), into which it integrates forms of music of variety.

In 1970, Ludwig van comes to underline, by the repercussion of its cinematographic version, the invention of Kagel in the kinds of the scene, the concert, the cinema and the radio. The following year, Staatstheater precedes by little a return to the symphony orchestra with the Variationen ohne Fuge . Instrumental parts and theatrical parts continue to be imbricated in this exploration of the amazing sounds and the gestures “  producteurs  ” of music: of Charakterstück for quartet of zithers and Exotica for non-European instruments (1972) to the two operas Die Erschöpfung der Welt (1980) and Aus Deutschland (1981).

Since the years 1980, Kagel breaks more and more conventions and the practices auditives : Rrrrrrr… , together of 41 parts (1980-1982) and Third string quartet (1986-1987).

Mauricio Kagel is the author of compositions for orchestra, voice, piano and chamber orchestra, many scenic works, seventeen radiophonic films and eleven parts. It received the Erasmus price recently.
