Administrative area of the province of Quebec, located at the junction of the River Saint-Maurice and the River the St. Lawrence.
Making some 560 km length, the valley Saint-Maurice gave rise to several cities, in Mauricie itself (southern part) and the Highone (northern part). The Chef-lieu of the area is Three-Rivers. It is made up of 3 regional municipalities of county and 47 municipalities.
The name Mauricie was created by the father Albert Tessier to replace the old expression of “valley of the Saint-Maurice”. The Maurice of which it is question is Maurice d' Agaune.
The development of this area was done initially since Three-Rivers which constituted a strategic site for the trade of the furs to the mouth of the Saint-Maurice river. Covering an important territory, displacements inside the territories of hunting were facilitated by this river.
As from the XIXe century, the development of Mauricie was justified by the industry of paper. This area rich in forest resource benefitted once again from the Saint-Maurice river for the transport of the “pitounes”. In the Nineties, the paper companies ceased receiving wood by the river rather preferring to use chips conveyed by train. More than 10 years after this change, of the significant amounts of trees still recover the bottom of the river. The effects on the quality of its water as on its marine animal-life are still perceptible. To decrease the effect of it, of the cleaning campaigns were entâmées by the various governmental stages. For the majority of the places, the bathe on the Saint-Maurice river, before inconceivable because of the nauseous odor and the toxicity of water, became possible again.
