Maurice Wilmotte (Liege July 11th 1861 - Saint-Gilles June 9th 1942) is a Belgian Romaniste and a Walloon militant.

He is regarded as the father of the Walloon School of Romance philology, he acquired an international repute after brilliant studies with the Université of Liege (ULg), in Paris, like in Germany. He is named ordinary professor with the Ulg in 1895. He inaugurates the Section of Romance Language and Littérature of ULg.

Founder of “the Walloon Review”, it tries to continue the action of Albert Mockel which put an end to the review Wallonia, re-examined transitory (1893-1894), which launched the Symbolisme like literary school.

He takes part in all the Walloon congresses of 1905 to 1913. In 1912, it is reserved on the " separation administrative" , preached by Jules Destrée. Defender of the French language, it cannot plan to drop the Walloons from Flanders (COM one called them then).

When the First World War bursts, it takes refuge in France: appointed professor in Bordeaux, it gives then courses to the Sorbonne. It also takes part in the effort of propaganda to convince Italy to join the camp of the allies. It is in 1931 qu ' it is allowed with the éméritat.

One can quote of him, in particular, the study of the Séquence of Holy Eulalie and announce that he was the laic godfather of Jean-Maurice Dehousse.

Maurice Wilmotte was selected like one of the Hundred Walloons of the century, by the Institut Jules Destrée, in 1995.
