Biography
This artist is a Alsacien of Mulhouse, where it is born on September 17th 1881.
Maurice Achener studies at the school of decorative Arts of Strasbourg. But this teaching not answering its aspirations, it is with Munich with the Kunstakademie that it supplements its formation. It is there the pupil of Ludwig Von Leofftz, and of Peter Halm who makes him discover the Eau-forte.
In 1901 Emile Schneider and Goerges Ritleng create the group of artists called “the company of the Alsatian Artists”. This company counts among its members Maurice Achener, Schoen, Hansi, Alexandre Urbain, and NR. Forsberg. It binds friendship with André Engel also originating in Mulhouse. It publishes articles in the illustrated Alsatian Revue , French patriotic publication published by Charles Spindler.
Maurice Achener fixes himself in 1905 in Paris. In the years 1907-1908, he works with Jean-Paul Laurens.
Naturalized French in 1913, it takes part in the First World War, on the French side and under the name of family of his wife Emilie Patry.
It is primarily a landscape designer, realizing on the sharp one, of many drawings, and paintings which it then uses for his engravings. It sometimes happens to him to work directly on the plate. Each engraving passes by many " états" , even until more than 10. He seeks carefully the Papier which will be appropriate best for its pullings. It thus collects papers of the 17th century for its impressions. It carries out to him even its inks. It is a meticulous and precise engraver, but its work is poetic and although being located in a traditional tradition, very personal.
It draws much Paris but also furrows the remainder of France to the liking of its orders. It illustrates Alsace, the the Alps, with a predilection for Our-Lady-with-Bellecombe, the Provence, the area of Poitiers, Carcassonne, the Corsica and the Brittany. He also visits Italy, Germany, Switzerland. He remains in Tunisia and in the United States, where its works are bought by large collectors.
He carries out thus approximately 550 engravings primarily strong water and dry points. He also paints oils and uses also the Pastel for some beautiful portraits, in particular those of the children of his family.
After a long career of artist, during whom it will not cease working, recognized for his talents of engraver and illustrator, it dies in Paris on April 19th 1963.
Jean E Bersier thus presents it in 1963: “The engravers Beaufrère, Mac Langhlan, Achener represent with various titles an honest and solid art. ”

Exposures
In Paris, it is present as of 1914 at the living room of the National company of the fine art and associated section of engraving in 1925. It takes part also regularly in the Salon of autumn and the Salon of Decorative Arts. It exposes with the Société of original engraving in Black. It is the subject of a personal exposure to Paris in the Gallery Marcel Guiot 4 rue Volney in 1927. It presents 54 engravings of Italian landscapes to it (Fiesole: Landscape Tuscan , Venice: Dolce idleness , Vicence the tower , Florence…) sights of Strasbourg, Paris of Freiburg and Provence. The catalog of this exposure is prefaced by André Blum: … It is not a distracted walker for whom the aspects of nature do not change; he feels on the contrary at each time the different effects produced by the shade or the sun, by the wind by the vapors which assemble ground, by the fogs, by the rains which unceasingly modify the aspect of a ground corner. To express the truth of these harmonies, its science plays with dexterity of the black and the white, of which it emphasizes the various values on its tests, knowing to indicate by its sizes what each element of landscape means… At the time of this exposure the International Herald Tribune devotes to him an article signed by Emily Holmes Coleman. It indicates its membership to it to the " Los Angeles print society " and " Chicago Society off Etchers ". As from 1922 and until 1954 it is one of the artists of the Galerie Sagot Garrec. It exposes to Chicago with the gallery Albert Roullier. The Galerie Simonson 19 rue de Caumartin in Paris shows engravings and drawings of Maurice Achener, Samuel Chamberlain and Jose Pedro Gil in May 1929. In 1962 at the end of its life, the town of Mulhouse devotes to him a sixty years retrospective of engravings. This exposure is organized by the Société Godefroy Engelmann. And in 2003 it is in Mulhouse that the Library-media library pays to him homage by the exposure entitled the Soft Luminosity of the sky .
