Maurice Challe is an aviator and general French, born with the Pontet (Vaucluse) on September 5th, 1905 and dead on January 18th, 1979. Shawl is one of the four organizing generals of the Putsch of the Generals to Algiers in 1961.
Beginning of career
Shawl joined, in 1923, the Military academy of Saint-Cyr military school and becomes second lieutenant in 1925. Left the School, it enters the air force and receives a training of pilot. In 1932, it is promoted captain. In 1937, it joined the University of air war and finishes in July 1939 its training of staff officer.
In 1940, Challe takes part in the air battles in the North of France and is high with the rank of officer of the Légion of honor. After the
rout of the French Army, it takes the command of the group of recognition 2/14 in Avignon. In May 1944, working under the name of code of Guy, it transmits to
London important secret documents of the German air force. After the unloading of Normandy, he becomes inspector of a flotilla of bombers.
Post-war period
In 1947, Challe is transferred to the general staff of the air force and in 1949, it receives, as brigadier general, the command of the French air force in protectorate
Morocco Ain. In 1953, it is named director of the University of air war. Promoted major general, he becomes chief of general staff in 1955. After its nomination like
General of the air, it becomes on October 1st, 1958 the assistant-air of the general
Raoul Salan in French Algérie.
Crisis of Suez
It belongs to the French delegation with
Maurice Bourges-Maunoury and
Christian Pineau during the tripartite secret meeting of
Sevres (Protocoles of Sevres) preliminary to the Opération Musketeer in reaction to the nationalization of the
Suez Canal by
Gamal Abdel Nasser.
After the change of the Salan general, it replaces it in Algiers on December 12th, 1958. The operations against the FLN then follow what is called the “Challe plan”. In 1960 he is recalled in metropolis and until its voluntary resignation in January 1961 he works at the general headquarter of the allied Forces in Center-Europe (AFCENT) of NATO.
April 21st, 1961, it is with Raoul Salan, Edmond Jouhaud and André Zeller one of the four generals who undertake in Algiers the military putsch against the Algerian policy of de Gaulle. The attempt fails and Shawl is imprisoned in Paris with the Prison of Health.
Last years
At the same time as Zeller, he is condemned on May 31st, 1961 by a military tribunal, at fifteen years of detention and the loss of his civic rights. After holdbeing held with
Clairvaux and
Tulle, it is released by anticipation in December 1966 and is amnestied by de Gaulle in
1968. It published its memories under the title
Our Revolt and died on January 18th, 1979.
