Maurice Schumann , born the April 10th 1911 in Paris, deceased the February 10th 1998 in its birthplace, is a French politician and journalist.
He studies in the colleges Janson-with-Sailly and Henri-Iv then with the faculty of letters. Entered journalism, its articles are published in Grand Report, Seven, Temps present, the intellectual Life, the Paddle, Réalités and Company.
Volunteer in 1939, it joined the Général de Gaulle in July 1940 and becomes the spokesperson of the free France. One hears his voice familiar on the waves of Radio London of the BBC. It takes share with the battle of France, initially with the British army, then with the 2nd D.B.
De Gaulle known as of him: it was one of the first, one of best, one of most effective.
In 1946, the Colonel Passy tarnishes this image by showing Schumann not to have dared to jump in parachute. This last, ulcerated required of the de Gaulle general to give him a sign of sympathy . De Gaulle answered him in a letter whose the Duck connected knew the text and which it published the November 6th 1946:
One allots to De Gaulle the following reaction to the news of the conversion of the Judaïsme to the Catholicisme, in 1942, of Maurice Schumann: “That will make a Christian moreover, that will not make a Juif of less” (Josy Eisenberg in Le Figaro of the September 8th and 9th 2007).
It chairs the popular Republican movement of 1945 1949.
Deputy MRP, then UDR, of the Northern of 1945 to 1973. It was of 1957 to 1967, president of the Commission of the Foreign affairs of the National Assembly.
Beaten with the elections of 1973, he is senator UDR and RPR North in September 1974, vice-president of the Sénat of 1977 to 1983, re-elected senator in 1983 and 1992, president of the Commission of the cultural Affairs of the Senate of 1986 to 1995. He sits until his death in the Senate.
He occupied several ministerial functions: secretary of foreign affairs in the cabinets Pleven, Faure, Pinay, Mayer and Laniel of 1951 to 1954. With Ve République, he becomes Minister for the Town and country planning of Georges Pompidou in April 1962 but he leaves the government as of the next month, after the press conference of the de Gaulle general on Europe, with other ministers MRP, remaining however in the majority. He is then minister of state in charge of the Scientific research and of the atomic questions of Georges Pompidou (1967-1968), minister of state in charge of the social Affairs of Maurice Couve of Murville (1968-1969), where he was proud to have been the only minister in charge for the family of his time cause a drop in the family benefits.
The post of Foreign Minister is the last of his governmental career. He is chief of the French diplomacy of 1969 to 1973 in the governments of Jacques Chaban-Delmas and Pierre Messmer. Chaban-Delmas announces to him in these terms its nomination: “it is necessary for us at the same time to ensure the continuity of the gaullism and to give a new departure to Europe, you are our man. ” During its passage to the Quay of Orsay, the United Kingdom enters the European Economic community (Europe of the Last nines). He goes to China and Mao says to him: “you will say to the French Maoists that they want to read me well before calling upon me! ” . At the sides of Pompidou, it attends the launching of a rocket with Baïkonour. It also joins again with Algeria at the time of a visit with Boumedienne. Near Nixon, he pleads for European Europe.
He leaves the Quay of Orsay after his failure with the legislative elections.
“The more European of the gaullists and more the gaullist of Europeans”, Maurice Schumann is however opposed to the Treaty of Maastricht in 1992 then founds the Alliance for the sovereignty of France.
Elected the French Academy on March 7th, 1974, it failed in the conquest of the town hall of Lille in 1977 against Pierre Mauroy; impassioned Bridge, Omar Sharif tells in her book the tournament that they had played together.
