Maurice Sartre , born with Lyon the October 3rd 1944, is a Historien French, specialist in the history of the Greek world and Eastern Roman world, in particular of the Proche the hellenized East, Alexandre to the Islamic conquest.

It followed its study academics to Lyon, in particular his control of history under the direction of Pierre Vidal-Naquet on the topic of the border in the old Greece. After its aggregation in history, it took part in the archaeological campaigns in Afghanistan, then was directed towards the Proche the East hellenized under the influence to Jean Pouilloux which directed its thesis of State entitled " Bostra and the Roman Arabia ". He was also lecturer at the University of Clermont-Ferrand.

He is currently professor of old story to the Université François-Rabelais de Tours, member of the Academic institute of France, director of the tourangelle antenna of the UMR 5189 of CNRS " History and sources of the ancient worlds " (HISOMA). He wrote many works on the history of the the Middle East and the the Eastern Mediterranean in the Antiquité, works often of broad synthesis, intended for the students but nevertheless accessible to a cultivated public. He also published several volumes of the Greek and Latin inscriptions of Syria and Jordan.

He works more largely with the diffusion of the university historical culture near the general public. He took an active part in the creation of the Rendez-vous of the History of Blois under the impulse of Jack Lang as a first president of the scientific advice of this demonstration to international vocation. He is also member of the editorial board of the magazine the History and it is a regular collaborator of the supplement books of the newspaper Le Monde each Thursday. He exerts also the president's function of the European Institut of history and the cultures of the food (IEHCA) whose seat is with Tours.
