Maurice Ponga is a politician calédonien, born the June 5th 1947 with Kouaoua (New Caledonia).

A career of teacher in the private one

Mélanésien born in the mining small village of the east coast of the Large Ground of Kouaoua, he becomes teacher within the Federation of free Teaching protesting (FELP), the organization managing the denominational educational establishments protesting in New Caledonia. Thus, he will teach 1966 with 1976 with Houaïlou before taking the station of teaching person in charge of the FELP of 1977 with 1995.

Political career

He launches out for the first time in policy at the time of the provincial elections of the July 9th 1995. Anti-freedom fighter, it is then fourth on the list RPCR led by Maurice Nénou which obtain 3 seats with the Parliament of the Northern Province and to the Congress of the Territory. In ineligible situation, Maurice Ponga makes nevertheless his entry in the assembly of Province and with the Congress following the death of Maurice Nénou the November 27th 1996. The January 29th 1999, it assumes even the chairmanship of the Commission of the Health and the Social protection of the Congress following the resignation of Gaël Yanno. Lastly, second on list RPCR in Northern Province, which obtains 4 seats at the assembly of Province and 3 with the Congress, at the time of the provincial ones of the May 9th 1999, it is indicated to enter the First Government of New Caledonia carried out by Jean Lèques. It thus made a rather late entry in the political life calédonienne but its rise was rather fast, even if there remains ignored an enough personality of Calédoniens. If not, member of all governments of New Caledonia since 1999 (except for the first government Thémereau which will resign as of its installation in 2004), it successively was in charge of the sectors with the Agriculture and the Elevage in the government Lèques with 1999 with 2001, then of the Agriculture and the Pêche within the first government Frogier of 2001 with 2002, then always of the Agriculture associated this time with the Mer in the second government Frogier and finally with the Jeunesse and Sports in the second government Thémereau then in the second government Martin since June 2004. This station, it played an active role in the success of the candidature of Noumea for the organization of XIVe Jeux of the Pacific in 2011.
