Maurice Duault

Maurice Duault , born about 1113 or 1115 at the village of Kerbarth in Croixanvec, was abbot of the Abbaye of Langonnet then founder of the Abbaye Notre-Dame de Carnoët.

Wire of tenants installed in Croixanvec then close to Loudéac, Maurice Duault studied with Pontivy then with the Université of Paris. But, hardly priest, 23 years old, he becomes monk cistercian with the young abbey of Langonnet about 1142. Died of the abbot, Maurice succeeds to him, about 1145-1346.

In 1170 the duke Conan IV gave to the monks cistercians Abbaye of Langonnet several villages located near the forest of Carnoët in the diocese of Cornwall to establish a community there. In 1777, Maurice prent the head of a group of twelve companions to found the abbey of Clohars-Carnoët there. He dies there on September 29th, 1191. Thereafter, the abbey took its name.

The legend allots many miracles to him, which makes of it a saint with the eyes of the people (Saint-Maurice) but it is however not a saint recognized by the church. Only vox populi canonized it. Its festival takes place on October 5th.

Several vaults were dedicated to him:

  • one which still exists with Kernével
  • in Locronan which disappeared after the French revolution.
  • with Loudéac, gone back to 1778-1779 contains four stained glasses of 1564 which representing the Vie of Maurice saint (Roman legionary, died martyrized into 286) and the Life of saint Maurice Duault.
