Maurice Chappaz

Maurice Chappaz was born the December 21st 1916 with Lausanne, (Suisse) and passes its childhood between Martigny and the Abbaye of Châble: wire and nephew of notary, it made his studies with the college of the Abbaye of Saint-Maurice then it is registered first of all with the Faculty of Law of the Université of Lausanne, which it leaves soon to be registered with the Faculty of Arts of the Université of Geneva.

Poet above all, Maurice Chappaz publishes its first text, a man who lived lying on a bench , in December 1939. With this occasion, it receives the encouragements of Charles Ferdinand Ramuz. But as of the summer 1940, the war stops its studies. It is then brought to traverse the Swiss borders and publishes in the review Lettres several texts which will form in 1944 the Great Days of Springs , greeted by Paul Éluard. After the war, Maurice Chappaz travels to Europe, then meets his future wife, S. Corinna Bille, in 1947. Without profession regular and wishing to devote its time to the writing, Chappaz is occasional Correspondant in the press, and manages the wine field of his/her uncle in Valais. Passing through a personal serious attack, it multiplies the wanderings and the questions, and is tested with several trades. Following this period, he will write Were worth It with the gosier of thrush (1960), the Chant of Large Dixence (written since 1959, published in 1965), the Portrait of the Valaisans (1965), Office for the dead (written in 1963, published in 1966), Tendres Campaigns (written in 1962, published in 1966),…

Maurice Chappaz still achieved many tours around the sphere: Lapland (1968), Paris (1968), Nepal and Tibet (1970), Mount Athos (1972), Russia (1974 and 1979), China (1981), Lebanon (1974), Quebec and New York (1990). As of the death of Corinna Ball in 1979, it leaves Veyras and is established in the maternal Abbey of Châble (VS). It then publishes poems balanced between the burlesque one and the funeral tone ( to laugh and die , 1983), begins a Journal of 6000 pages, held without interruption of 1981 to 1987, writes a poetic account and proses on the topic of mourning ( October 79 and the Book of C. , 1986). Concerned about publish the New S left by Corinna Ball with its death, taking again the Translation Virgile for the editions Gallimard (1987) and All Idylle de Théocrite (1992), it outlines an evocation of the antique alpine civilization, Were worth-Tibet (2000).

In 1997, Maurice Chappaz obtains most prestigious from the Swiss prices, the Grand Prix Schiller, like in France, the Stock Exchange Goncourt of poetry. With the autumn 2001, Gospel according to Judas , account of theology-fiction, appears at Gallimard.

In 2002 Maurice Chappaz collaborates with a work " Letter of a forête to the autre" with the review of art HOLE (# 12); the edition of head (100 numbered and signed specimens) contains the facsimile of the manuscript of its speech of thanks for its title of Commander of arts and the letters, pronounced in Martigny in autumn 2001 for the Ambassador of France.
