Maurice Audin (1932 - 1957) was a assistant of mathematics French at the university of Algiers, member of the Algerian Communist party and militant of the cause Anticolonialiste, missing during the Bataille from Algiers.

The Audin business

At the time of the Battle of Algiers, Maurice Audin is stopped in his residence, the June 11th 1957, by the Devis captain, the lieutenant Philippe Erulin and several soldiers of the 1st regiment of hunters parachutists, to be transferred towards a destination where it is assigned with residence. A trap being installed in the apartment of the Audin family, Henri Alleg, former director of the Republican newspaper “Algiers”, author of the Question , is stopped there the following day. Except for the soldiers, it is the last to have seen it alive. The trace of Maurice Audin is consequently lost for his wife and their three children.

According to the members of its political family and an investigation of Pierre Vidal-Naquet which writes, in May 1958, in the first edition of “the Audin business”, that the escape was impossible, Maurice Audin died during a meeting of torture, assassinated the June 21st 1957 by lieutenant Charbonnier, officer of information being useful under the orders of the Général Massu.

According to the French Army, Maurice Audin escaped while jumping from the Jeep which transferred it from its place of detention. As of July 1957, certain newspapers start to evoke “the Audin business” and, the December 2nd 1957, defense in absentia of the thesis of doctorate of State of mathematics of Maurice Audin, “on the linear equations in a vector space”, under the presidency of Laurent Schwartz, causes the indignation of certain academics. “Audin committees” are created to make the light on the business and to sensitize the opinion on the practice of torture in Algeria. A judicial enquiry is carried out following the complaint of his wife. At the request of lawyers of Mrs Audin, the instruction is transferred to Rennes in April 1959 and is prolonged until in 1962. A Non-lieu is pronounced, in April of the same year, for insufficiency of loads. Moreover, the decree of the March 22nd amnesties “the facts made within the framework of the operations of maintenance of law and order directed against the Algerian insurrection. ” The lawyers appeal then seize the court of appeal. Their appeal is rejected in 1966. The body of Maurice Audin not having been found, a death certificate is established by the court of Algiers, on June 1st 1963, the judgment becoming executory in France the May 27th 1966. A new withdrawal of case will be pronounced in 2001 following a new complaint of his wife for “sequestration and crime against humanity. ”

In June 2007, its widow, Josette Audin, writing with the President of the Republic recently elected to ask him that the mystery of the disappearance of her husband be cleared up and that France assumes its responsibility in this business.

  • “Association Maurice Audin” organizes a price of mathematics decreed each year with two Lauréat S, a mathematician exerting in Algeria, a mathematician exerting in France. The members of the jury of the price are, in theory, the President-in-Office of the Learned societies of mathematics, SMF and SMAI; the two other members are Algerian mathematicians.

  • With Algiers, a place of the downtown area, near the University, bears its name. On this “place Maurice Audin” is, in particular, the seat of Air Algérie.
