Maurice-Edgar Coindreau

Maurice-Edgar Coindreau (December 25th 1892, the Roche-sur-Yon - October 20th 1990 with Limeil-Brévannes) is a translator French of the Spanish and English into French, who largely contributed to make known the American Littérature Années 1930 in France.

Biography

Incorporated of Spanish, M. - E. Coindreau works with the French college of Madrid before teaching French with the Université of Princeton of 1922 to 1961. It has as friends Darius Milhaud, Robert Casadesus and Gaby Casadesus.

Impassioned by the literature of the the United States of America, it makes discover with Gaston Gallimard of many authors as Ernest Hemingway ( the Good-bye with the weapons and the Sun rises also ), John Dos Passos ( Manhattan Transfer ), William Faulkner ( While I fail , the Noise and the fury ), John Steinbeck ( Grapes of anger , Of the mice and the men ), Truman Capote, Flannery O' Connor, William Goyen or William Styron, authors of which it translates the principal novels. These authors will have a great influence on the French writers like Joseph Kessel, Pierre Drieu La Rochelle, Albert Camus or Jean-Paul Sartre.

It also translates Spanish novels of Juan Goytisolo, Ramón del Valle-Inclán, Miguel Delibes or Anna María Matute.

In 1981 is created a Price of translation to its name, decreed each year since 1982.
