History
Mauléon is located on a rocky outcrop surrounded of the Valley of Ouin and which is opposed to the Mount-strapping man (Castle-strapping man) and to the district of Saint-Jouin.In 1080, the name of Mauléon appears in the first charters of the Abbey of the Trinity.
Mauléon is the stronghold of the family which bears the same name, most known is Savary Ier, seneshal of Poitou, troubadour, poet, corsair and taker of city. In particular, it seized Niort in 1205 for Jean without Ground. At the 13th century, Mauléon will belong to the Viscounts of Thouars.
Mauléon was very disputed during the wars of religion because it was a strategic place.
In 1587, Henri de Navarre will seize Mauléon. And the city will be taken six times of continuation, sometimes by the huguenots, sometimes by the catholics. In 1642, the castle (ramparts, turns…) who dominates the spur will be dismantled by Richelieu very concerned of the reunification of the country still too attached to his traditions according to him.
In 1716, the Viscount of Trémoille sells the baronnie to the marquis of Flocellière, Gilles of the Barns of Surgères. Twenty years later, this last resells the baronnie with the Duke Alexis Madelaine Rosalie de Châtillon, governor of the dolphin, wire of Louis XV. Using of its influence at the court, it gave to Mauléon its name, thus Mauléon became for a time Châtillon-on-Sevres (a Duchy-Peerage) whereas the latter, the Nantes Sèvre, passes only to approximately 8 kilometers.
In 1965, the communes of Saint-Jouin under Châtillon and Châtillon-On-Sevres will meet and become only one and even commune under the old term of Mauléon.

The Abbey of the Holy Trinity
Founded towards the end of the 11th century, the Abbey of the Trinity of Mauléon about Saint Augustin quickly becomes the principal religious center of the region. The regular monks will settle in the Abbey until in 1540. Then the monks commendataires will take the changing. In 1660 the Abbey of the Trinity will enter the congregation of France of Génovéfains whose seat was with the Abbey of Holy Genevieve with Paris. The wars of religion will precipitate its decline and it will be unfortunately plundered several times at the end of the XVIe century. Restored after a fashion by the brothers Cardinaux D' Escoubleau de Sourdis with the XVIIe century, Finalement, it is towards half of the 18th century that one entirely rebuilds the abbey of the Trinity on a plan of " iron with cheval" whose frontage measures more than 65 meters length. Ruined after the Revolution, the Abbey of the Trinity will not be saved by the wars of vendées with the 18th siècle. The history of the Abbey will die out in 1806 with its last prieur.
Sold like national good in 1803, it will be repurchased in 1813 by the commune of Châtillon-on-Separates to install there: town hall, law courts, gendarmerie and asylum for children. The sisters of Wisdom who deal with Asylum, founded a very pretty small neo-gothic Vault. Today still, the old Abbey shelters the town hall. In the place of the gendarmerie is the post office and in the place of Asylum for child, the museum of the BRHAM.
The Abbey of the Trinity, built in the local stone which is the granite is of neo-gothic style. The first level is borer large bays illuminant a large corridor which formerly was used as corridor which recall the cloister. The second level has also beautiful windows with stone edge in covered. A pretty wrought iron balcony decorates the main entrance and one can still see the blazon of the Duke of Châtillon surmounted by the ducal crown and the collar about St Spirit
The Church of the Holy Trinity
Founded with the XIIe century, the church of the Trinity will be also ruined by the wars of religion at the 16th century and will be set fire to during the wars of the Vendée.In 1793, D' Elbée will be elected Généralissisme of Insurgent in the church of Trinité.
It will be increased at the 19th century of three spans and restaurée.
The Church of the Holy Trinity has a pretty harmonic frontage which goes back to 1854 (restorations).
Its old Romance gate was re-used like main door of the presbytère.
The nave is a vast stressed volume of rectangular pillars. Its apse has cut sides covered with woodworks carried out in 1835 on the model of the stalls of the Cathedral of Angers.
The church will know another historical event: following the law of December 1905 on the separation of the Church and the State. The February 14th 1906, a dispute between the gendarmes of Cholet who come to make a inventory and Châtillonnais will burst. Traces on the doors of the church still testify some and show " blessures" catholiques.
Since the beginning of the year 2006 the church of the Trinity undergoes a large building site of restoration: vaults, frames, walls…
