Mauges

The Mauges are a small area of the west of the France, located in the department of Maine-et-Loire.

Etymology

The country of Mauges owes its name with its basement rich in ores: metallica regio or Pagus Medalgicus or Pagus Metallicus (country of metal) which evolved/moved gradually in Mauges . According to a " légende" recurring, the name of Mauges would come from Jules César, appealing " Bad Gens" population of Mauges of the time.

Geography

Mauges are located at the extreme south-east of the Armorican Massif. The area is limited clearly to north by the the Loire, in the south by the Nantes Sèvre, while in the west and the east the limits are fuzzier, in the east by the barrier of Schiste which extends between Cholet and Saint-Lambert-of-Lattay the and in the west by Divatte for the North-western part and by the Nantais vineyard for South-west. The landscape preserved its scrap-metals and is furrowed valleys, in particular those of the Èvre and Sèvre Nantes. This undulating region culminates with the puy of the guard and its 216 meters, Saint Georges of the Guards being the most village of Mauges. The country of Mauges counts today 63 communes, located in a triangle between Nantes, Angers and Cholet. This Country, does not correspond completely to the historical limits.

History

The oldest traces of human presence go back to 10.000 years before J. - C.: double-side were found on the site of Fuilet, close to Cholet.

Several dolmens and menhirs also testifies to the settlement of the area, in particular with the Fief Sauvin and Saint Macaire.

Aquitanian ground of the Poitou, Mauges becomes Breton at the time of advanced kings Erispoé and Salaün in Armorique and in the Bocage in the south of the the Loire (areas which correspond about to the territory of the military Vendée). Finally, most of Mauges are attached to the Anjou following the conquests of Foulque Nerra, count d' Anjou with depends on the Brittany and the Poitou. Mauges are subdivided since the 9th century between a Breton part (ignored because reduced) between Sèvre, Moine and Divatte and a angevine part (regarded ill-advisedly as the whole of Mauges) located at south-west of the Anjou, in the south of the Loire. Mauges, in addition to their historical fasteners angevines, political and cultural, preserve an influence poitevine at the level dialectal and architectural, Nantes and Vendean at the musical, historical or economic level. They are known to have been one of the principal theaters of operation of the wars of the Vendée whose Cholet was the center.
In 1789 the inhabitants of the commune of Boissière-of-Gilded the, located on the Right Bank (slope angevin) of the river Divatte, forget to send representatives to Paris during the creation of the French departments. This negligence will cost them their separation of Mauges and the Anjou and their fastening the department of the Loire-Inférieure.
