Matvei Gusev
Matvey Matveyevich Gusev (in Russian: Матве́йМатве́евичГу́сев) (1826 (Vyatka, Russia) – 1866 (Berlin, Germany)) was a Russian astronomer which then worked with the Observatoire of Pulkovo close to Saint Petersbourg of 1850 with 1852 then with the Observatoire of Vilnius (that it founded at the university of Vilnius).
He was the first to show it not sphericity of the the Moon, conclusive which it was lengthened in the direction of the Ground.
In 1860, it created the first scientific magazine dedicated to mathematics and physics in Russia: Vestnik matematicheskikh nauk (Ru Вестникматематическихнаук).
Large a crater on Mars is named Cratère Gusev according to him, well-known because being the site of atterissage Mars Exploration Rover Spirit .
He is regarded as one of the pioneers in the use of photography in astronomy, having taken stereotypes of the Moon and Sun - with sunspots - when he was at the observatory of Vilnius.
He became director of the observatory of Vilnius in 1865.
