Matthias Erzberger

Matthias Erzberger , German politician and journalist, (* September 20th 1875 with Buttenhausen (in the kingdom of Wurtemberg) - † August 26th 1921 with Bad Griesbach (in Bade)

Member of the Zentrum (left wing of the party), appointed with the Reichstag of 1903 with 1918, it is specialist in the questions of finances there, he supports the policy of armament of the government Theobald von Bethmann-Hollweg, but in July 1917 after a stay near the Pope Benoît XV he proposes with the Reichstag a motion of peace which is adopted by the majority of the deputies. To the head of the German delegation, it leads the negotiations and signs the November 11th 1918 the Armistice with Rethondes.

Erzberger enters to the government of Philipp Scheidemann and becomes, in the cabinet of Gustav Bauer, vice-chancellor and Minister for Finance. It realizes, in little time, a tax reform by reinforcing the central capacity and by democratizing the tax system which bears its name. After a denigration campaign by the line he resigns the March 12th 1920.

Matthias Erzberger was assassinated the August 26th 1921 by nationalists of the Extrême right-hand side (probably belonging to the Organization Consul).
