Matthew Webb (born the January 19th 1848 in Dawley, in Shropshire, in England; died the July 24th 1883 with the Falls the Niagara, the border between Canada and the United States), is a captain, known to have the first carried out the Traversée the English Channel with the stroke, the August 25th 1875. Because of unfavourable currents, he traversed a total distance of 64 km in 21 hours and 45 minutes.

He drowned while trying to cross to the stroke the rapids and swirls downstream from the Chutes of the Niagara.
