Matterhorn Bobsleds

Matterhorn Bobsleds is an attraction of the type Russian Montagnes lodged in a counterpart of the Cervin ( Matterhorn in English) located in the park Disneyland in California.

In 1959, it belongs to six new major attractions of the " Nouveau" Tomorrowland. It is only in 1978 that she was officially declared like an attraction of Fantasyland.

This attraction was for a long time the only attraction of Disney having for topic the mountain and snow. Attraction Expedition Everest in Disney' S Animal Kingdom is a renewal of the topic but in “larger, further and higher”.

The concept

The Matterhorn Bobsleds is a reproduction of a Swiss mountain with a Swiss village with its foot. One embarks on train to discovered snow-covered mountain. One meets his cousin or abominable snowman there the Yéti. Attraction consists of two Russian mountains out of metal overlapping. She is recognized as being the first Russian mountain of the world with tubular metal structure. The system of support would be partly the work of the engineer Roger E. Broggie.

It is one of the most sincere homages to the former president of the Walt Disney Company, Frank Wells. Frank Wells one was impassioned of climbing and died brutally in an accident of helicopter in 1994, with its return of a stay in mountain. This homage is due to Bob Baranick, a member of the team of decoration of Disneyland. One can see these trunks, in the scene of the Caverne of Hook just at the end of the principal rise in the form of a last forwarding for this senior mountaineer.

  • attraction includes/understands a half-ground of tennis shoe, located at the top of the structure of the Russian mountain, close to the top with a wood parquet floor accessible only to the “mountaineers” or the cast-members authorized for safety reasons. A room of rest exists however at the base of the mountain for the employees. It can however be useful for the Fairy Small bell before or after its take-off above the park according to whether it leaves the mountain or the castle.

But what is most important is it why of this terrain.
the legislation of the State of California imposed, at the time of construction, that any building a height higher than 25 meters, was to have a certain percentage of its surface dedicated to the sport. Not to see itself refusing the construction of attraction, Walt Disney thus made add this half-room. The law in question was amended and repealed a few years later.
  • the voice which pronounces the message " Remain seated please. Permanecer sentados por favor." at the end of attraction is that of Jack Wagner. This last carried out many recordings for Disney.
