Matter of Brittany
The matter of Brittany is the name given to the whole of the texts written with the Moyen-âge around the legends of the island of Brittany and small current Brittany historical Brittany, in particular those of the Cycle arthurien. It represents the Celtic tradition , in opposition to the Carolingian tradition of the Matière of France and with the Latin and ancient traditions of the Matière of Rome.
The poet Jean Bodel (1165 - 1210) wrote that there existed three matters: “Those of France, Brittany and Rome. These three matters do not resemble each other. The tales of Brittany are so unreal and tempting! While those of Rome are erudite and in charge of significance and that those of France see each day their confirmed authenticity! ”
