Mattathias
Mattathias , Jewish priest of IIe century before the Christian era, is the father of the first Hasmonéens which returned its independence to the Judaea.
In -167, Mattathias is distinguished while refusing, in spite of the pressing request for a Syrian troop, to offer sacrifices to the Greek gods in his small town of Modiin, in the north of Jerusalem. According to the Books of the Stiffs, it kills Judéen which advances to obey the orders of the Syrians that it fights with the assistance of its five sons before fleeing in the mountain by enjoignant the " faithful to the Torah " to follow it. This is the first stage of the war of the Macchabées which leads to the independence of Judaea.
The five children of Mattathias are:
- Yohanan = Jean called Gadi.
- Simon called Tassi (reign on Judaea from -143 to -135)
- Juda (the revolt from -166 directs to -160)
- Elazar called Avaram.
- Jonathan called Afous (reign on Judaea from -160 to -143)
Juda will succeed to him, with its death one year later, the head of the revolt.
