History
The name of Mattaincourt comes from Martin Court, or the field (of Latin " curtis") of Martin. This Martin Gallo-Roman whereas Hymont, the close village, was to belong to a Franc, was undoubtedly named Hindonis. The Roman way, of Langres to Metz, today practicable way in the North-West of the village, constitutes for a share the main roads of Mattaincourt at the city close to Mirecourt.
Formerly, water of Madon was used for the pressing of cloth. One bought wools with Frankfurt or with Strasbourg and cloth was sold not only in Savoy, but still in Burgundy, Switzerland and as far as Flanders. The clothiers of Mattaincourt, Mirecourt, Poussay, were gathered in a powerful corporation. On each fabric part the mark of the tisserands was affixed. One can still see, on one or the other carries, in Mattaincourt, the “4 of figure”, which one said being that of the clothiers.
